Biography

Vincent F. Rush of Rock Hill passed away at home on January 18, 2012. He was 82 years old. The son of the late Robert T. Rush and Catherine Cleary Rush, he was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 10, 1930.

During the late 1940's Vince worked for a time as a forester near Coer d'Alene in northern Idaho. After graduating from Saint Peter's College in 1952, Vince served on active duty as a naval officer during the Korean War. Soon after his marriage to Rosalie Joy Savage in 1962, he moved to Sullivan County and worked as a science teacher for 30 years, first at Tri-Valley, and later at Fallsburg High School. As a retired part-time employee at Monticello Raceway, Vince was also very active in the labor movement in Sullivan County and played an important role in bringing union representation to parimutuel employees at Monticello Raceway during the 1970's. He also served as the first president of the Sullivan County Central Labor Council.

Vince was an avid sportsman, who loved hunting and fishing. He particularly enjoyed raising beagles for hunting snowshoe hare. After his retirement in 1992, he enjoyed travelling to visit his children and grandchildren. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was active in the Knights of Columbus and St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Monticello.

Vince is survived by his wife Rosalie Savage Rush at home; his brother John Rush of Montgomery Village, MD; his four children: Robert J. Rush of Huntington Beach, NY, Paul V. Rush and his wife Eliane of Grahamsville, Matthew S. Rush and his wife Zigrid of Highlands Ranch, CO and Maureen T. Rush Stewart and her husband Mark of Fairplay, CO; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Friday, January 20 from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the VanInwegen-Kenny Inc. Funeral Home, 401 Broadway in Monticello. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 21 at 10:00am at St. Peter's Church, Broadway and Liberty Street in Monticello, with Fr. Stanislaus Ogbonna officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Sullivan County Veterans Cemetery in Liberty.
